Self Awareness Is A Superpower

FULL TRANSCRIPT

Welcome to the first episode of coffee and converse in 2021. First of all, let me say happy new year we survived 2020, and hopefully, it is onwards and upwards from here. I decided to kick off this year with you in the same way that I kick off a new client relationship. when I start working with new clients, I love to chat to them about their superpower, that skill or talent that makes it really easy for them to get more results in less time. Unfortunately, for many of us, we believe that superpower is something that's probably come from study or experience or repetition. So we're left wondering why something still feels a bit often our business, even when we're focusing on that. we've all heard that expression, that business problems are really mindset problems in disguise, but I want to take that a step further and say that actually business problems are often self-awareness problems. Self-awareness is just your ability to objectively evaluate yourself in any given situation, task, or relationship that kind of ability to step back and see your thoughts and feelings and behaviors to evaluate maybe how you're helping or how you're hindering a situation or process or conversation, and to notice how you're being perceived by everybody else. when you increase your self-awareness in your business, you will find it so much easier to get results because you can focus on what you do. Well, you'll find it easier to communicate more clearly with your team and keep them motivated because you know how what you're saying is being perceived and how you can adapt that to be better received. You'll find it easier to attract the clients you'd love to work with because you will understand what they need in a situation versus what you need in a situation. And generally, you'll find it easier to be happier at work because you'll be working what works for you. It sounds great. Right. But what do you do if you're not really feeling super self-aware right now, or even worse if you think you are self-aware and you're actually not? A Harvard Business study found that only 10 to 15% of people are truly self-aware and most people think that they are. So there's some discrepancy there that everybody can work. Luckily self-awareness is a skill that can be cultivated. That means a bunch of introspection, journaling, deep questions, and tough conversations. And while I highly recommend that you engage the services of a kick-ass mindset coach on your business journey, that can be a really long game. If your business could do with UV more self-aware right now. so what can we do right now, then instead, number one, ask friends, family, or peers, what they think you're great at and where they think you could use a little bit of improvement. I'll put a script in the show notes for this because I know that can be, I guess, feel like a super awkward ask. You'd have to make, but the bonuses this time of year, a lot of people are going into, how can I make this a better year? How can I be a better person? So it makes it the perfect time to ask without the massive awkwardness. Second, asked for feedback from your clients whenever you finished a service for a client, or if you are in a long-term service contract, you want to be asking at regular intervals, full feedback on the service and make sure that when you're asking those feedback questions, at least one of them is how could I improve or what else could I do that way? You'll start to encourage constructive feedback. Number three ask for feedback from your team. Now it's really important here that you make it clear that constructive feedback is welcome. And won't be held against anybody. You may want to consider having an anonymous way to collect this feedback. If you feel like people might still be a little intimidated or nervous to critique you in your role as their boss. Now, these are all great options, but they do rely on other people feeling comfortable enough to tell you the unvarnished truth that can be really hard to ask for. And it can be equally hard to receive. So my preferred method for rapid self-awareness is to test for it. You may have done some of these tests before and found that they gave you some great insight, but without much guidance, that could be a little bit complicated to understand, to remember, and then to implement. My clients use a business development tool instead it's called wealth dynamics, and it was developed specifically with entrepreneurs in mind, and it allows you to really simply understand your profile and what you should start, stop and continue doing in your business to maximize your results. The idea is to get you to your goals as fast as possible in the most fun way possible. If you want access to this tool, you can go to Diane maya.com forward slash 2021. And because you're part of the pod squad, if you use the code podcast, there's a massive discount waiting for you as well. 2020 changed the landscape for online businesses and what worked before won't necessarily work again. So as we go into the new year, self-awareness is likely to be the ultimate superpower in your business. It will allow you to reflect on what is and isn't serving you right now, who you want to be spending time with going forwards, and show you how you can show up bigger, better, and brighter in 2021.
