Why You Need To Simplify Your Systems

I bet you're really great at selling and attracting people and bringing people in everything's on point from a front-facing perspective. And then when somebody asks to see something in your backend…oh, the shame spiral

It's held together with a couple of toothpicks, sticky tape, an AppSumo deal here or there, and some manual workarounds all connected to an emailer.

Want to know what I hear most about these kinds of backends…

  • how time-consuming they are
  • how exhausting they are
  • how draining they are
  • how you don’t have the time or energy to figure out something different

So if you’re about as excited about

  • figuring out the best system
  • diving into some Google research
  • drawing out systems
  • looking for control failures
  • spotting out where things are going wrong
  • finding the fix

as watching paint dry, you look for other options…usually the fancy-schmancy software or hiring someone who was drooling over that list.

But that means overpaying on the software you use 1/7th of the feature on or bringing in a team member who can’t deliver the work you’re handing over AND fix the nightmare you call operations and is likely to leave in frustration.

So stop abdicating systems because it’s “not your thing”

Pick an area to start with, eg client delivery. Now find the simplest solution that you can use to deliver the service you've promised.

  • For 1:1 a calendar tool that accepts payment and zoom.
  • For one-to-many, a Google calendar that you can send everybody the link to and Zoom.
  • Course or membership set it up in Facebook with each module in as a different guide with the video, with the workbook

Needing the fancy software is to established entrepreneurs is the same as “I need a logo” to newbies, unnecessary most of the time.

If you're delivering the result that you're promising, people are not going to care how fancy your backend is. It's probably a million times easier for them to use a Google sheet to give you information or submit an air table form than it is to log into a different anyway.

Make your backend as streamlined and simple as possible.

Then as you scale and that setup starts to feel stretched, you can bring people in to:

  • do a VIP day to help you find the next level of your systems
  • join your team in charge of systems who is in flow, doing all of these system things to take it to the next level.

Systems might not be exciting to you but the more comfortable you can get with your backend, the more you can live in your superpower on the front.
