Why You Need To Be In Flow In Your Biz (And How To Get There)

FULL TRANSCRIPT

Today, I want to chat about something that's probably gonna seem a little bit woo at first but as usual, I want to talk about it in a really practical sense. I want to dive into the concept of flow. So you've probably heard of it. It's often described as being in the zone or losing track of time being completely absorbed in a task or activity being a hundred percent present. There's many different ways that it can be described, but they're all describing that same feeling. Most of us have something in our business that creates this effect for us, where we could just keep on going and going and going, I do want to just pause for a moment to make sure that, when you're thinking about flow, it's very distinct from competence. So when you're really good at something. It can feel easy. And so people can sometimes mistake that easy feeling for flow. And so the distinction between doing something that you're good at and doing something where you're in flow is really about how you feel energetically. If you were doing something and you're in flow, it's creating energy for you. So you are the Energizer bunny, you can keep going and going and going and going, doing that task. If you're competent at something, you'll probably get through that task relatively easily, but it's not going to provide you any extra energy. In fact, it's probably going to take some energy from you to do it. You're going to need to recover. If you're still not a hundred percent sure, ssk yourself, if the task that you're doing, would be willing to do for somebody else? Would you be prepared to only do that task for the rest of time? Often the things that we're good at, are not the things that make us feel energetically great. So while we're pretty good at them, we don't want to keep doing them as our job forever. So, if we're talking about flow it has to be because it has some practical bearing on your business and it does. Being in that flow state has two big impacts on your business. First, it makes your business more sustainable for you. If you are doing an activity that is creating energy for you, that means that you can continue on doing more of it. Hence your business stays sustainable. If you're doing an activity that you're not in flow for, it's draining energy from you. At some point, you are going to have to stop. Second, consider where you really deliver for clients. When somebody sees you in flow and feels that energy from you, sees how effective you are, they are naturally going to trust that you can deliver for them 110%. They're going to be more likely to invest with you. When somebody is seeing you out of flow, you're just going to be not quite as good. Being in flow allows you to produce more value for the people paying you and hence people will trust you to pay you more. Now I get it, I'm sitting here telling you that you need to be more in flow because it's going to make you more sustainable and it's going to make you more money but what about all those things you have to do in your business that aren't in flow, but you still have to do them? The first step is actually determining which things you're in flow for and which things you're out of flow for. This may take some observation. You may need to take a week, maybe longer, where you're looking at the activities that you're doing, and you're asking yourself, how did I feel at the end of this? Did I feel energized? Could I have kept doing this? Do I want to be doing this? If the answer is yes, that's a flow activity. If the answer is no, it's not a flow activity. Once you have that designation, you can start to look at the non-flow activities and look at how we can minimize those. That may mean that you automate some things so that you have to spend less time doing it. It may mean that you delegated if possible to a team member. Ultimately though there are going to be some things on that non-flow list where you are like, I can't delegate this. I can't automate this. And it still has to get done. Here's the deal. When you're doing those things, you have to show yourself a little more grace. If you're doing an activity where you out of flow, you're going to need to allow yourself some recovery time. On those days, you are going to have to allow yourself a little more self-care on those days. Often we see that the flow activity is the work that we do for our clients. That's often how we've arrived at our skillset and what we want to deliver. So, what I suggest you think about in your day is starting off the day with anything related to your pipeline or marketing, make sure those activities that are going to bring money into your business are taken care of first, A lot of entrepreneurs don't love the sales and marketing side of their business, so I kind of want you to bribe yourself to do that first by then allowing yourself to have the flow activity. So you're going to do the thing that feels a little bit hard first, but you know, the payoff is going to come in doing the thing that you really love, and it's going to be energizing and exciting for you to do. Then once you've had that energizing chunk of your day, let's put the things where you're probably really out of flow, the admin side of your business, at the tail end of the day. Let's utilize that energy that we're generating from being in flow to push through those non-flow activities. And then immediately follow that with our self-care with our recovery period. So that we're ready again, the next day. All it really comes down to when we're talking about flow is how are we managing our energy? How are we finding our path of least resistance to our goals? How are we managing how we feel through a day through a week, through a month in our business?

Flow can make you more money in your business. It may be a feeling but you can implement it in your business in a practical way.
